Parq Life
Parq Life, the first collaboration between British product designer Lee Broom and Deadgood, is a parquetry-inspired furniture and lighting collection that showed at the Farmiloe Building. Broom uses marquetry to trick the eye and create the appearance of solid wood curving to form simple shapes. The pieces of satin-finished walnut veneer
that form the classic herringbone pattern are all handpicked and the tops are made of polished, reflective, brass.
Patricia Urquiola
Andreu World
Nub Chair
Paricia Urquiola (featured in Icon 097) designed the Nub Chair. The cylindrical wooden bars that form the chair’s backrest are inspired by childhood memories of the wooden bobbins her grandmother used to make lace. Urquiola says: “I always incorporate my domestic, private and past lives into my projects.” Some of the bars puff out at different points along the lumbar region, adding a playful quality to the chair.
David David
Chair
Glass Hill
Chair, shown by Glass Hill at the House of Detention, has been designed by fashion label David David and is the first release of an ongoing collaboration. The chairs are produced in a limited edition of 25 and have geometric patterned surfaces that reflect the fashion label’s T-shirt designs. The chairs, which were originally shown in the retail space at the Saatchi Gallery, are decorated with colourful pencil crayon, drawn directly on to their yellow pine surfaces.

Aroun light
Ligne Roset
Jean-Philippe Nuel’s Aroun light caught our eye at the Ligne Roset stand in the Farmiloe Building. Although a subtler design than the brand’s other 2011 launches, such as Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s Ploum sofa and François Azambourg’s Grillage chair (both Icon 094), Aroun holds its own with a simple, sculptural form. Nuel, who named his lamp after the Thai word for dawn, claims the design is a complete original, with no stylistic references.
Young & Norgate
Animate
bedside table
We spotted the colourful Animate bedside table by Devon-based design company Young & Norgate in the relative gloom of the House of Detention. In a collection dedicated to “good design and longevity”, Animate is intended to make a feature of the table’s drawer mechanics, with details picked out in American black walnut and light blue Formica. The whole collection was impressively crafted – pieces that had a distinct retro appeal with a contemporary twist.
Jaime Hayón
FAVN sofa
Republic of Fritz Hansen
Fritz Hansen celebrated the UK launch of Jaime Hayón’s FAVN sofa in style, serving up Scandinavian cocktails in the B-Loose showroom for all three nights of Clerkenwell Design Week. In a first-time collaboration with the Danish furniture manufacturer, Hayón created a sofa based on the shape of a shell, taking inspiration from Arne Jacobsen’s 1950s Egg and Swan chairs.
