It’s the final day of Clerkenwell Design Week – here are some events to catch before it’s all over Talk: Reclaim the street: Designing the Urban Commons Four practitioners present their approaches to public realm design, discussing their efforts to restore open spaces and improve the collective life of the city, in London and abroad. Panelists include Deborah Saunt, director of DSDHA (who designed the proposal pictured above); Renato Benedetti, director of McDowell+Benedetti; landscape architect and White Arkitekter partner Niels de Bruin; and Kathryn Firth, director of development, urban design and masterplanning at Publica. The talk will be chaired by Peter Murray, chairman of New London Architecture. 4.30pm, Design Factory, St John Street , EC1M 4AY Talk: Dominic Wilcox The designer and artist will be speaking at Icon’s cafe in the House of Culture. Wilcox draws on his witty, whimsical perspective on everyday situations to devise his ideas and inventions – many of which are presented in his recent book, Variations on Normal. He will discuss the different methods he uses to be creative and how he came up with some of his ideas. 1pm, Icon’s House of Culture, 22 Clerkenwell Green, EC1R 0NA Film: Objectified – at Designworks Tiles’ Pop-up Cinema Screening of documentary Objectified, which examines our complex relationship with with manufactured objects and, by extension, the people who design them. Through vérité footage and in-depth conversations, the film documents the creative processes of some of the world’s most influential product designers, and looks at how the things they make impact our lives. It’s a look at the creativity at work behind everything from toothbrushes to tech gadgets, and it’s about the designers who re-examine, re-evaluate and re-invent our manufactured environment on a daily basis. 1pm, Designworks Tiles showroom, 91 St John Street, EC1M 4NU Talk: Holly Lewis, We Made That In the final of Icon’s talks at the House of Culture, Holly Lewis, co-founder of the Hackney-based practice will discuss the practice’s approach to localised regeneration in the context of public sector cuts. 6pm, Icon’s House of Culture, 22 Clerkenwell Green, EC1R 0NA Talk: The Architect Pitch This Clerkenwell Design Week session invites architects to test their communication skills in front of a panel of leading industry experts and a live audience. Organised by Archiboo, the event is a unique opportunity for seven selected architects to showcase their practice, and receive productive feedback. The panel includes Pocket Living’s Russ Edwards, Solid Space’s Gus Zogolovitch, Malcolm Reading Associates’ David Hamilton and Del Hossain from Adrem. 3pm, Design Factory, St John Street , EC1M 4AY Talk: Set Design for the Big Screen: Spooks the Greater Good Set designer Liz Griffiths and production designer Simon Bowles discuss just-released British MI5 spy film Spooks: The Greater Good, for which SB Seating supplied its HAG H04 chairs for the base. 3pm, SB Seating showroom, 63 Central Street, EC1V 3AF |
