A chandelier reminiscent of scientific equipment, ceramics that resemble iced biscuits and products made of discarded glass are among the items on display at the cafe and gallery 19 Greek Street’s cafe and design gallery has fast become a hub for innovative and experimental projects. The gallery is hosting three exhibitions during London Design Festival, as well as giving tours of Library, a private member’s club. Masterpiece A show of eight one-off pieces chosen for their innovative processes and complexity is designed to put the viewer in a reflective mood. Transmission, by Studio Deform, is a chandelier made from prefabricated Simax glass, which takes inspiration from scientific equipment such as test tubes and beakers. The effect is a lamp that is both recognisable and refreshingly unpredictable. Other works include Hamajima Takuya’s Shelf 02 and the Analogia Project’s Storywall.
Transmission by deFORM from studio deFORM on Vimeo. The Design Cafe Collection This selection of sustainable design reflects the cafe at 19 Greek Street’s eccentric culinary offerings. Christina Schou Christensen’s Shaping Fluid cylinders are a series of ceramic and glaze temperature experiments that look like elaborate iced biscuits and the Current Table by Marjan van Aubel acts as both a piece of furniture and an energy source. Another highlight is Andrew Simpson’s Junk Press, which recycles discarded post into paper bowls. All the work is displayed in the café itself and goes along with its existing collection. Glass Lab Diana Simpson Hernandez gives an opportunity to see inside Glass Lab, based at 19 Greek Street. As the founder of an innovative waste-processing collective that finds new uses for glass disposed of by local businesses, her work remakes the material into usable products such as tiles and street furniture. The Royal College of Art graduate’s aim is to “create new social interactions and business opportunities that reinforce the local culture”. The shows open at 19 Greek Street, London W1D 4DT on 12 September. Tours of Library (112 St Martin’s Lane, London WC2N 4BD) take place between 10am and 6pm throughout the festival |
