In New York the East River has been adorned by four man-made waterfalls, designed by artist Olafur Eliasson. “I didn’t really want to do something very big,” said Eliasson at the opening in June. “I just wanted to do something that I felt was appropriate to the scale of the city.”
The waterfalls, commissioned by the Public Art Fund and the City of New York, are between 27 and 37 metres tall and pump out 135,000 litres of river water every minute.
The scaffolding structures carrying the water are lit up by LEDs in the evening, until 10pm when the water is switched off. When the waterfalls are dismantled in October the scaffolding will be reused at building sites around New York.
